About

Alexis Johnson is an eclectic artist in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They have a bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, with a minor in Arabic and Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Minnesota -Twin Cities.  During their undergrad, Alexis was the president of the Digital Art Studio student organization for two years. Currently, they are the co-President of the Strawbebbies Art Club, an online artist collective for 20-somethings trying to keep art in their lives post-graduation.

Alexis’ interests range from illustration, 2D game asset production, background art, and isometric art. Their main media are pen, digital illustration, and block printing. They enjoy themes of contrasting figures, exploring gigantism, and placing realistic figures in fantastical settings. Their illustrations often imply a story, like the cover of a book.

Alexis also explores fiber art, in the form of weaving, embroidery, and sewing. They have an ongoing embroidery series illuminating the works of Studio Ghibli. They have been sewing apparel since 2020, and most of their wardrobe is hand made these days. Eventually, Alexis hopes to hand weave enough cloth to sew into a garment. Alexis’ fiber art escapades are currently not for sale due to the labor intensity of their work .

Alexis takes inspiration from the natural world. They often portray figures outside in natural lighting with soft, organic shapes. They illustrate skulls, bugs, whales, and landscapes, drawing inspiration from the ephemerality of the natural world. Paper, fibers, and oils break down over time, and even digital data corrodes. Despite being an archivist at heart, keeping every sketchbook they’ve completed, Alexis finds it reassuring to know their sketchbooks and finished pieces will decompose, just like themself.

Alexis’ credentials include displaying their illustrations at Sencha Tea Bar at Mall of America (May 2018), tabling at the Cherokee Street Print Bazaar in St Louis (2023), displaying their embroidery at Manchester Arts (2024) and Webster Arts (2023) in Missouri.
